Marin Mersenne Marin Mersenne (1588-1648) was a French mathematician and Minim friar known (among other things) for his conjecture concerning the primality of certain numbers of the form 2p–1, where p is prime.  Prime numbers of that form are called Mersenne Primes. The largest known prime number at any time is often a Mersenne Prime.  The numbers and the formula are of interest to those studying prime numbers and searching for new primes. The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search project has more information about Mersenne and the search for large prime numbers.
